Ruidoso Downs Gearing Up for Race Season

The Ruidoso Downs racing surface is being prepared for opening on May 22 and will be ready for the first day that horses are allowed on the track, April 27.

Horses begin to arrive on the Ruidoso Downs backside on April 23.

The summer racing season at Ruidoso Downs begins on May 22 with the daylong trials to the grade 1, $500,000 Ruidoso Futurity. Ruidoso Derby Trials follow on May 23rd. The season concludes on September 7 with the grade 1, $2 million All American Futurity.

                “We’ve brought in about 600 tons of new material” Les Nichols, Vice President of Racing and Operations, said. “It will be a superb racing surface dedicated to the safety of jockeys and their horses.”

                Quarter horse workouts from the gate will begin on April 28th *with thoroughbreds working out of the gate starting the following week.

    I think the date that horses can start getting works at Ruidoso Downs is April 28, not May 28th. Maybe you should check with Les Nichols to be for sure. I can't see how they wouldn't get works the whole month before they open.
