Important Notice For New Mexico Horsemen

TODAY , February 12, 2009 , AT A REGULAR CALLED MEETING, THE NEW MEXICO RACING COMMISSION TOOK STEPS TO RESTRICT THE USE OF 4 ANABOLIC STEROIDS IN RACE HORSES RACING IN NEW MEXICO

The 4 medications are:  Winstrol, Equipoise, Testosterone and Nandrolone

The restrictions on the use of Winstrol, Equipoise, Testosterone and Nandrolone will become effective on March 1, 2009.

All other anabolic steroids except for Winstrol, Equipoise, Testosterone and Nandrolone will be  totally prohibited in  horses racing in New Mexico effective March 1, 2009.

Any horse that requires the administration of any of the restricted medications to recover from illness or injury after March 1, 2009 may be placed on the Track’s Veterinarian List for monitoring.  Once the horse is determined to be under the threshold levels set for such medications the horse will be allowed to resume racing in New Mexico.

Violation of  the threshold levels established for any of the above listed medications will be considered a class 3 medication violation. Penalty phase for violation of the rule will commence 90 days after March 1, 2009.

Currently Winstrol, Equipoise, Testosterone and Nandrolone are federally controlled substances.  This means that the veterinarian who prescribes the medications must properly record and document any administration of the medications. This will act to further control the administration of the 4 medications to racing horses come March 1, 2009.

Consult with your vets accordingly regarding this rule change.
