Note For Horsemen
As of this date, the NMRC has not enacted any rules that change the use of or administration of anabolic steroids for horses that race in New Mexico. These medications remain legal for use in New Mexico.
There is an informational study presently being conducted by the NMRC and the other entities on the use of such medications on horses in New Mexico. If a horse is found to have a level that is considered to be excessive, the trainer (certainly) and the owner (probably) of said horse will be notified confidentially of the level that has been determined. There is no penalty if a horse is found to have an excessive level of such medication in its system.
Again, the use of anabolic steroids in race horses that run in New Mexico continues to be legal. Consult your veterinarian for more information regarding the use and administration of such medications.
We do not anticipate that there will be changes to the rule regarding the use of anabolics in the first quarter of 2009. All horsemen will be provided with ample notice and time before any rule will take effect.
Call Pat Bingham at the NMHA if you have any questions or comments regarding this note.
Your inquiries are kept confidential.

Why have you not followed the rest of the country and made this illegal? And when is the hearing for Stolis Winner? Please don't wait too long, as you may take away some prizes from other horses.

We need to make steroids illegal in New Mexico as soon as possible. There is no reason that we should be doing something different than the rest of the Country.
