Sunland Park Proposes Policy to Allow Horses That Run In Trials to Retain Zero Date

Horsemen, we need your input on this topic:

Sunland Park will propose at the Racing Commmission meeting set for Thursday, November 20, 2008 a policy that would allow horses that run in futurity trials to retain the zero date or run date that applied to them immediately before running in the trial.  This policy would provide that "The horses entered in trials would retain their previous  date until entered in a non trial race.  This policy would include both quarter horse and thoroughbred trials". The proposed policy if approved by the NMRC  would apply to the 2008-2009 race meet.  What are your thoughts on Sunland Park's  proposed change to the way that the zero date/run date system is applied?   We need your input before the November 20, 2008 NMRC meeting.  Currently, Lone Star, Remington Park, Canterbury  and Prarie Meadows handles the zero date in the same manner as has been  proposed by Sunland Park.  Send me your comments in an e-mail to

All horses entered in any futurity trial should be treated the same as any other horse entered in any type race. The proposed change will not be fair to other horses. It takes too long to get a horse entered in races at Sunland Park as it is.
