Horsemen:

The New Mexico Racing Commission will meet for its regularly called August meeting  at the State of NM Personnel Office, Leo Griego Auditorium located at 2600 Cerrillos Road this Wednesday, August 13, 2008.  The public session of the meeting will commence at 9:30 AM.  On the agenda is discussion of the selection of a new racetrack for New Mexico.  The contestants for the last franchise are Raton, Tucumcari and Santa Fe.  The NMHA does not expect that a final decision will be made following Wednesday's meeting.  Final action on the selection of the new racetrack for New Mexico will probably occur at a special called meeting set for later this month or early next (September 2008).  Please plan to attend this meeting.

I was very disappointed in that the association did not endorse any of the proposals.I know Santa Fe stepped up and tried to woo everyone with no place to go, problem is when they ran there not many horsemen liked it that much.. Tucumcari simply is too hot in the months needed.Raton I believe is the logical place and while you folks finally had a chance to do something for the horses and their health you dwelt at the gate.
I think that it is important that this organization starts taking a long look at who it really represents and begins to act more transparently than it has in the past.

An Independent economic evaluation showed Tucumcari would exceed Raton in purse money by 1.7 Times. This study was conducted by a firm specializing in business economics. These were reliable numbers! The fact is Raton does not have the traffic to sustain a casino for years to come, it may survive but it will not prosper. Not one commissioner stated they picked Raton because it was the best for the horse breeders, owners and trainers. I,m from the Raton area and it is a cold lonely place in the winter. The people that make their living from the purse money is who lost this week. I wonder who gained? At 1.7 times the purse money if the average purse in Raton was 10,000 for example, and Tucumcari was 17000. Ten Races a day is 70,000 and 50 race days per year is 3.5 million lost to the horseman per year. Twenty years is 70 million dollars. How come nobody is upset about this?
