Ruidoso Downs Update

Ruidoso Downs wasted no time getting to the hard work of repairing their facility after the seven inches of rain they received from Hurricane Dolly. Ruidoso Downs will resume racing this Saturday with an all Quarter Horse venue. On Sunday afternoon,  five quarter horse stakes races will be run: the Zia Futurity, Zia Derby, Zia Quarter Horse Championship, Mr. Jet Moore Handicap, and the Ford New Mexico Juvenile Challenge. The Zia derby, Futurity, and Q.H championship were all part of the canceled Zia festival. In addition to the carded quarterhorse stakes several overnight thoroughbred races will be run.

Repairs to the main oval are proceding well and all concerned expect that  a good and safe track will be the final result.

The Senor and Senority Futurities  (cancelled due to the rain deluge) will be run on August 16, 2008.  Plans are being made to run the balance of the cancelled ZIA day card including the Lincoln Handicap, the Road Runner Handicap, the Sierra Starlet, the Land of Enchantment Handicap, and the Zia 870 Championship, over the Labor Day weekend as a prelude to the 50th annual All American Futurity to run on Labor Day September 1, 2008.

Our appreciation and thanks go out to the staff at Ruidoso Downs for their tireless efforts these past days as well as to all the management at all New Mexico tracks, including  Sunland Park and Zia Park for their assistance. We also extend  thanks to the Horsemen, the NMRC and the Jockeys for their support in this effort. Our  best wishes also go out to  the village of Ruidoso and Ruidoso Downs as they recover from their ordeal.
